Richard C. Monk is a senior partner in the law firm of Hollister & Brace. He received his B.A. in Business Economics from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1965. From 1965 – 1967 he served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army, with duty stations in the United States and Thailand. He received his J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1970. During law school, he was a member of the University of San Francisco Law Review and the recipient of several scholarships.

Mr. Monk practices general civil law with an emphasis in Land Use; Real Estate; Property Development; Environmental Law; Administrative Law; Condemnation Law; and Litigation associated with the foregoing specialties.

Mr. Monk was counsel for the developers in Citizens of Goleta Valley v. Board of Supervisors (1988) 197 Cal. App. 3d 1167; Citizens of Goleta Valley v. Board of Supervisors (1990) 52 Cal 3d 553; Morehart v. County of Santa Barbara (1994) 7 Cal 4th 725; City of Goleta v. Superior Court (2006) 40 Cal 4th 270.

Mr. Monk has served on the Boards of Directors of the Downtown Organization of Santa Barbara, Inc. and the Santa Barbara Chamber of Commerce, serving as its Chairman in 1988. He is a Trustee Emeritus of the Santa Barbara Foundation. Mr. Monk holds an “AV” Rating from Martindale-Hubbell, Inc. – its highest rating awarded to attorneys.
