Peter Candy joined Hollister & Brace in 1999. He is a partner in the firm’s real estate and environmental law practice. His client base consists of residential and commercial land developers, oil and gas producers, and agricultural landowners. Mr. Candy works extensively with all aspects of land use entitlement and real estate development law, including natural resources law, wetlands, endangered species, and water law.
Mr. Candy has successfully entitled numerous residential subdivision projects. He structured the acquisition, financing and construction of several key pieces of regional public infrastructure. He advises his oil and gas clients regarding their land use and resource extraction activities. He assists his agricultural clients with their environmental compliance and water supply matters.
Mr. Candy has successfully completed a number of large scale water supply acquisitions. The most prominent involved the purchase of 400 AFY of State Water Project entitlement for a large-scale development project located in Santa Barbara County. The transaction was unique in that it represents the only public to private transfer of SWP entitlement to have occurred within the Tri-Counties area.
In addition to water supply transfers, Mr. Candy handles complex ground and surface water right disputes. He represents different landowner clients in the ongoing adjudication of the Santa Maria Groundwater Basin. The adjudication involves competing agricultural and municipal priorities to both native and developed groundwater supplies. Mr. Candy, together with several other key landowner and municipal attorneys, successfully crafted a long-term physical solution for the Basin which allocates groundwater among the competing demands. The physical solution is now being implemented.
Mr. Candy currently serves as President of the Board of Trustees to the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum.
